He made his debut CD entitled 'Mixed Emotion' in 1998 featuring the vocalist Kelly Hurley.  It was at the time called "San Diego's best homegrown album" by several music critics.  Around this same period he was hired by an affiliate of Atlantic Records to write and produce a demo for an upcoming country singer named T.J. Thompson.  He has played in many of the top venues in San Diego with his Mixed Emotion group.  In 1999, Clay left music and has now returned in 2011 to fulfill his dream.
.Most recently, he produced the San Diego Pop/Rock singer Wes Faith.  Wes's first album, tentatively entitled "Faith", was entirely written and produced by Clay Guthrie this year.  He also wrote and produced songs for the newly discovered artists Artavia and Stephanie.
